I remember when I was very little, flipping through a very old book and seeing a craft project  for making toy soldiers with toilet paper tubes. The image has come to mind now and then and I got the idea to make printable toy soldiers. They come four on a page. Print on card stock or regular paper. All you have to do is cut them apart, roll them into a tube and secure with a glue stick.

My toy soldiers are adorable standing at attention with arms stiffly at their sides. You can display them on parade or leave one or two standing guard over your Christmas presents.  Other uses include hanging as ornaments on your Christmas tree or wrapping around a jar or bottle to use as a vase.

These soldiers can be displayed year round to show your patriotism or love of military history. Here are four classic nutcracker or British soldiers, one naval officer, and one modern soldier in camouflage with green cheeks.

Our freebies today are mini carrier gift bags in Wall Street Journal headline and print from the July 12-13, 2008 Weekend Edition. As the weather is getting warmer, and the neighborhood birds are returning from their winter holiday, I was inspired to make birdhouses for my next set of printables. These birdhouses can be used as gift boxes, storage, ornaments, or nesting boxes for small birds and pets (indoors only).

There are two kinds of walls, vertical panels or stucco, in various colors. The roofs are also available in many colors. Simply assemble and insert the bottom. String may be threaded through the center of the roof (punch a hole with a needle) for hanging.

I have had finches who nested and raised babies in cardboard boxes fixed to the side of their cage with a twist ties. If making a house for live birds, make sure the cardstock is thick enough to endure a little moisture and secure the bottom with packing tape. You will still have to provide nesting materials such as grass or shredded paper. These houses are also an ideal size for pet mice. If using for rodents, avoid toxic inks.

Print on cardstock, landscape orientation, and select “Scale to fit page”. Instructions for assembly are printed on the templates.

With Christmas almost upon us, here are some last minute gift bag templates for the eleventh hour shoppers and gift wrappers. The Small carrier bags measure approximately 4 1/2″ tall, and the Mini carrier bags 3 1/2″ if printed on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of paper.

Tan Milk Carton

I have to admit that I am quite proud of my newest idea for free printables. These milk cartons with dairy cow prints are perfect for gift boxes, decoration, or storage. If putting cookies and treats in these cartons, be sure to choose a non toxic glue like Elmer’s Glue. Using a glue stick to seal the top will make it easier to tear open later. A plastic blag can be inserted to keep food fresh.

For myself, I am considering using one or more of my milk cartons to store jewelry that I don’t plan to wear in the near future. Other uses I can think of are table decorations for baby showers, packages for party favors, store-and-pour containers for buttons and beads or mini time capsules filled with keepsakes.

free adj. \ˈfrē\ Costing nothing.

There’s been a lot of “Free” promotions going on lately – Free Denny’s breakfast, Free Quizno’s Sub, Free Arby’s burger, and I’m sure there have been others – but I haven’t gone for any of them because it wasn’t worth the time nor cost.

If they’re free, how do they cost money?

If …

1. you have to go out of your way to get it, especially drive.
   Unless the location is right on the way to and from your daily activity, consider every extra mile you drive out of your way as a cost of $0.55, the IRS mileage rate for business use which includes gas and associated costs of wear & tear/maintenance.
2. you have to buy something, i.e. a drink, to get your free item.
   Even if it’s only $1.39 for the drink and you get a $4.00 burger for free, you’re still spending money.
3. there is a limit to how many free items you can get.
   You have family at home, and it wouldn’t be right to just pick up a sandwich for yourself. But you’re limited one free item per customer, so you have to buy the rest of the sandwiches.
4. you dine in (i.e. Denny’s).
   You have to tip. Or feel really funny for dining and dashing without tipping.
5. you arrive to find the store isn’t participating in the promotion.
   You’ve wasted a trip. And because you’ve gone all the way there, you might end up buying something anyway because now you’re starving.
6. you could be making money in the time it takes to wait in line.
   Especially if you’re self-employed, make money blogging, etc.

Living where I do (in a fairly isolated part of the Mojave Desert), and working where I do (at home), the prospect of going out espeically for a free sandwich or breakfast just isn’t worth my time and money.

The closest Denny’s from my house is a 15.3-mile drive, so a 30.6-mile round trip could count as an expenditure of $8.42, which I believe is more than the face value of the free breakfast. Even if I were going grocery shopping a mile down the road, being a dine-in only breakfast, I would’ve at least had to spend money on tip. It just all seemed like too much of a hassle.

There is actually a Quizno’s in our town, but chances of it participating in the promotion were nil to nil, because we’re somewhat isolated. Subways here don’t participate in the Subway Card program, so I didn’t want to go down to Quizno’s and find I’ve wasted my time and gas.

Free things are great. Just make sure they really are by defintion “free” before you jump.

Yes, I know I’m a little late in the game. Having seen references to Twitter all over the web in recent months, I finally decided to check it out and signed up this past Sunday. Twitter is a great, easy and fun way to interact with people – specifically for me, personal finance bloggers and blog readers.

What is Twitter

Basically, Twitter is a social networking website, but much simpler than Facebook or MySpace. You simply log-in to your account and type in your 140 character (or less) update to tell your friends and family what you are up to, what’s going on in your life, what you are thinking/doing/reading/watching/etc.

You begin by “following” other people – friends, family, classmates, etc. – subscribing to their updates. You interact by typing updates of yourself, and reading and replying to your friends’ updates. Eventually people will start following you. How Twitter Relates to Our Fourpence Worth

There is a great network of personal finance bloggers on Twitter. By following them, I can:

Many composers, Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven among them, have no living descendants and therefore their works have been bequeathed to the world, and to you. Why then are poor college students required to purchase volume after volume of expensive music scores for the purpose of learning a few pieces each semester? Surely not for the enlightenment of reading the editors’ introductions and comments (explanations which can be found elsewhere for less cost).

Thanks to the Internet, archives of public domain music are increasingly readily available to music students, teachers, and performers for the mere cost of paper and ink (plus the use of a computer). Some benefits of using public domain music are as follows:

1. It saves money. A ream of paper will cost you less than most music books and usually contains more pages. An ink cartridge is also cheaper than most music books (I nearly purchased a $70 book of sonatas once) and you can save more money by refilling the ink yourself.
2. This resource allows you to try out pieces without purchasing beforehand music that might not suit you.
3. Music teachers that regularly use public domain music do not need to stock up books for resale or send students and parents on quixotic quests for a particular edition.
4. Public domain music is useful for the study of music literature as it is easily collected and organized and can be studied directly off the computer screen.
5. These scores are often early editions (very quaint in appearance) and may be useful for comparisons in research and analytical papers.

The following are a few tips on printing and organizing public domain music:

• Select “scale to fit page” in print settings before printing.
• Print music one-sided so that the pages can be spread out on a piano. Even if you do not intend to play it yourself, you may need an accompanist at some future time.
• Have one folder containing only pieces being currently studied for the purpose of taking to your lessons. Pieces being considered can temporarily reside here.
• Organize printed music into categories by instrument, style, or composer. Secure these groupings of music into manila folders by the use of brads or threading yarn or string through punched holes. This method allows the music to be read, reorganized, or taken out and prevents the chaotic accumulation of papers on, around, and under, your piano.
• If your music has been wrinkled and trampled from being badly kept, we can tell you from personal experience that it is possible to restore damaged printouts by ironing with a flat iron (no steam) on a firm surface such as a table covered with a sheet. Ironing through a sheet of blank paper will ensure that you do not get ink on your iron.

Note About Copyright & Public Domain Works
Not all free music listed on the Internet is legally in the public domain. Countries have different copyright laws which determine the date range from which a work enters into public domain. I believe the general rule for most countries (United States and Europe) is 70 years for works produced before 1978, but Canada only has a 50 year rule. There is no universal copyright law and local laws must be respected. Copyrights may be renewed by the owners be they companies or individuals. A musical work can simultaneously exist in editions that are in the public domain as well as editions that are copyrighted.

  An extensive collection of free classical sheet music for almost all types of instruments and ensembles including sonatas, concertos, symphonies, etc. Some of the larger collections (for composers such as Mozart) spill over into Sheet Music Archive.
• Sheet Music Archive
  This site allows 2 free downloads a day, or unlimited downloads for a yearly subscription fee of $19.95 per year. But with many other free sites available, there really isn’t much need to pay for public domain music.
• Piano Public Domain
  As the title suggests, this is a collection of public domain classical music for piano. This site has both free and non-free music. The link above will take you to the free music. Other music is available at a small charge.
• Werner Icking Music Archive
  Free sheet music for various instruments by an extensive list of composers.
• Noten-Klavieren.de (Site in German)
  Click on “Komponisten” for the directory of free music sorted by composers, “Kammermusik” (Chamber Music) for ensemble pieces, which consist mainly of piano and violin duos, but there are also a few trios. “Klavier” means Piano, and “Geige” means Violin. Click on the title of the piece you want, then either “pdf” to print it or “mp3″ to hear how the piece sounds.

Vocal Sheet Music

• Art Song Central
  Still a fairly new but growing collection of art songs and arias for vocalists. Freely available to singers and teachers to print in PDF format.
• Choral Public Domain Library
  An extensive collection of vocal music in various arrangements for small or large ensembles. As of this writing, this collection holds 9,081 score pages and 1,292 composer pages. An invaluable resource for singers and choirs.

For Scholars of Music

• Digital Scores Collection (Harvard University)
  This is a library of digital photographs of original or old scores in the hand of the composers or copyists. This collection has been available to Harvard students and scholars around the world.
• Sibley Music Library (University of Rochester)
  Scans of various works by a large list of composers.
• VARIATIONS Prototype: Online Music Scores (Indiana University)
  A collection of scans of opera, song, choral, chamber, orchestral, solo instrumental and piano literature.

The above are just a few of the sites where public domain sheet music can be found. Another good place for music resources is your public library where you can check out books and scores of classical and contemporary music (including songbooks of contemporary artists and soundtracks of films). However, scores you check out from the library, especially, contemporary volumes, are not likely to be in the public domain, so be sure to abide by the copyright laws. The library is a good way for you to try out or learn new music you otherwise wouldn’t have access to.
