OK, I know the word “meme” is supposed to be a noun, but I couldn’t help myself. If you know my blog’s name, you know that I love to play with words. I coined – pun intended ;) – the word “pecuniarities” one night and just had to change my blog’s name. Besides, if “friend” can be used as a verb these days (“friend me on facebook!”), then it can’t be too long before “meme” becomes a verb.

But anyways, my new blogging associate, Trevor the Financial Nut, has tagged me for “7 Things You Didn’t Know About Me” and I figure it can’t hurt for fellow bloggers and readers to know 7 more things about me that aren’t already on our About pages.

First here’s how it works:

“7 Things You Didn’t Know About Me” Meme Rules

  1. Link to your original tagger(s) and list these rules in your post.
  2. Share seven facts about yourself in the post.
  3. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and the links to their blogs.
  4. Let them know they’ve been tagged.

7 Things You Didn’t Know About Penelope Pince

1) I once wanted to be a jockey.
When I was young, I was “horse crazy.” I read every horse book I could get my hands on, both fiction and non-fiction, and the Black Stallion series by Walter Farley was my favorite. When it became evident that I wouldn’t be suited for a career as a jockey (I’m big boned), I decided I’d be a racehorse trainer. Now I own a dog and horse costuming business.

2) I used to be a surfaholic.
Checking the surf report before bed, getting up at 4:00AM, donning bathing suit and surf shorts despite the cold, jumping into freezing water (OK, freezing by my definition is probably “temperate” to anyone who didn’t grow up in Hawaii) and catching waves at sunrise = Heaven on Earth.

3) I love Caesar salad.
Especially with lots of creamy garlicky dressing, crunchy croutons, grilled chicken, avocado, freshly grated parmesan and ground black pepper. Whenever we used to eat out, I always odered Caesar salad if it was on the menu, regardless of the restaurant’s specialty. My very favorite Caesar Salad was at a place called Pizza Bob’s in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu.

4) I have perfect pitch.
This means that if you were to play a note on an [in-tune] instrument, I could tell you what note it was without looking at the instrument or having previously been given a point of reference. Some say this is a curse that ruins your ability to appreciate music, but I don’t know any other way of hearing or playing music and can’t imagine what it would be like without it.

5) I like to whistle.
I whistle along to movie soundtracks (sometimes while watching a movie), concertos,  sonatas, instrumental segments of songs and pretty much any music that I can’t sing to. This drives Madoline batty, becuase it also includes while she’s playing the piano or singing, but I often don’t know I’m doing it. And I don’t always whistle the main melody; being a mezzo-soprano (vocal), I sometimes whistle harmony.

6) I was named after a song.
Not Penelope Pince (pen name), but my real-world name. I’m not telling what song or what name, but I will tell you the song was by Bread. I must say my mother had pretty good taste – in music and in names. I didn’t like it when I was young because it used to be a boy’s name and people always got it wrong, but now I’ve learned that it’s not so bad to have a unique name.

7) I am an obsessive compulsive-Type A-perfectionist.
It takes me about 2-4 hours to write and polish up a blog post  (large posts like my Frugal Valentine’s Gifts/Dates, Free Online Video Websites and Consumer Safety posts took days). I can’t rest until I am sure that I haven’t left out anything relevant, that there are no typos, grammatical errors, extra spaces, etc., and I still always manage to find something to fix after the post is published. This is not a trait I would recommend to anyone who desires a carefree existence with lots of sleep.

  1. FFB Says:

I hate you! You surfed AND you have perfect pitch?!? One day I’ll try out surfing (I know it’s possible in NY just not that easily accessible). I studied music for a time and got a real good sense of relative pitch but it certainly wasn’t perfect pitch. That would have helped a LOT in ear training classes. I can see how perfect pitch could make watching something like American Idol a bit cringe-worthy but I’d still love to have the ability.

(and if you haven’t figured out I’m just jealous, I don’t hate you)

  2. Do You Dave Ramsey? Says:

Good stuff Penelope, thanks for sharing. I’ll have to pull out my CD collection to see if I can guess your true name!

    Thanks for sharing!
    Dave (real name)

  3. Bible Money Matters Says:

You have perfect pitch, huh? That almost might be more of a curse than a blessing in my book. I know I have pretty good pitch, and watching shows like american idol, or listening to childrens recitals, etc can be pretty tough – as FFB mentioned.

  4. Penelope Pince Says:

@ FFB: I loved ear training in college (I minored in music) and especially enjoyed melodic dictation and sight singing. But I did have trouble with chord qualities – diminished, half diminished, augmented, etc.

Because I hear everything as individual notes, I had to identify each note and then analyze them to figure out which chord type the teacher was playing. I never had enough time for that one, so I didn’t do well on that chapter. :S

Surfing in NY sounds hard. I bet the water there is COLD!

@ FFB & Money Matters: I don’t actually watch American Idol, and I guess I’d better not. Children’s piano recitals wouldn’t be too bad (I used to be in them myself), but I think violin recitals would be another matter. :O

@ Dave: It probably won’t be hard to find it. I don’t know how many Bread songs there are, but there can’t be too many that someone can be named after. :)

  5. Trevor @ Financial Nut Says:

Perfect pitch?! Wow… :) That’s great! It was fun to learn more about you!

  6. Penelope Pince Says:

@ Trevor: Thanks for tagging me. It was fun. :)

  7. FFB Says:

See, ear training was always tough for me because I had to hear the relative pitch then remember the melody, timing, etc… I think I was pretty good at figuring out the quality of the chords though. I always like the theory classes (I remember I had a teacher who could tell you if your pinkie was on the wrong piano key from across the room) Of course if I spent less time playing video games and goofing off in college I would have been better at it (majored in music for a bit)!

  8. Penelope Pince Says:

@ FFB: I loved music theory! I majored in music for 2 years too: voice my freshman year, then piano my sophomore year. I did all that fun stuff – theory, ear training, conducting, orchestration, and then switched to languages (Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese & German) and linguistics in my junior year.

I sometimes wish I’d stuck with the music. I’ve considered going back to school to study composition. I’m a huge fan of original film scores – I love movies and I love music, so what better combination? – and would love to compose for film.

  9. FFB Says:

That was an aspiration of mine too. Wanted to be a combination of John Williams and Danny Elfman (and maybe some Carl Stalling too)!

  10. Penelope Pince Says:

@ FFB: Patrick Doyle is my hero. Also John Williams and James Horner, but I’ve really developed a taste for Patrick Doyle’s style in the last few years. I love the soundtracks from Sense and Sensibility, Much Ado About Nothing, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Nanny McPhee.

My favorite of his is “Neville’s Waltz” from Harry Potter. Such a great combination of humor and elegance.

  11. J. Money Says:

i cannot believe you were such a surfer!! i got one for like my 13th birthday when i lived in California and i only got on it once or twice before we moved across the country to the DC area = no waves.

def. cool to know about ya :) and i’d take ya up on the tagging situation but i actually just did one last month. but you can surely check it out and learn more! 25 Random & Odd things about J. Money

  12. TooCute Says:

I’m going to assume your real name is Aubrey. =) That’s a great song by Bread, by the way. I was named after a river in Europe that ran thru my dad’s hometown, but when I’m asked about it’s origin I always claimed I was named after a goddess, LOL. =P

  13. Penelope Pince Says:

@ J Money: You never cease to amuse. ;)

I currently live in a desert = no waves :( But I still have my longboard just in case. You never know when the California coast might decide to drop 100 miles or so into the ocean; if/when the time comes, I’m ready!

@ TooCute: I will neither confirm nor deny it, but if I told you, I’d have to kill you. Thanks for dropping by!

  14. Kate Says:

Alright, alright, I’m in. Thought my list isn’t nearly as interesting as yours.
