I currently live in a desert = no waves But I still have my longboard just in case. You never know when the California coast might decide to drop 100 miles or so into the ocean; if/when the time comes, I’m ready!

I’m going to assume your real name is Aubrey. =) That’s a great song by Bread, by the way. I was named after a river in Europe that ran thru my dad’s hometown, but when I’m asked about it’s origin I always claimed I was named after a goddess, LOL. =P

@ FFB: Patrick Doyle is my hero. Also John Williams and James Horner, but I’ve really developed a taste for Patrick Doyle’s style in the last few years. I love the soundtracks from Sense and Sensibility, Much Ado About Nothing, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Nanny McPhee.

My favorite of his is “Neville’s Waltz” from Harry Potter. Such a great combination of humor and elegance.

@ FFB: I loved music theory! I majored in music for 2 years too: voice my freshman year, then piano my sophomore year. I did all that fun stuff – theory, ear training, conducting, orchestration, and then switched to languages (Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese & German) and linguistics in my junior year.

I sometimes wish I’d stuck with the music. I’ve considered going back to school to study composition. I’m a huge fan of original film scores – I love movies and I love music, so what better combination? – and would love to compose for film.

See, ear training was always tough for me because I had to hear the relative pitch then remember the melody, timing, etc… I think I was pretty good at figuring out the quality of the chords though. I always like the theory classes (I remember I had a teacher who could tell you if your pinkie was on the wrong piano key from across the room) Of course if I spent less time playing video games and goofing off in college I would have been better at it (majored in music for a bit)!

@ FFB: I loved ear training in college (I minored in music) and especially enjoyed melodic dictation and sight singing. But I did have trouble with chord qualities – diminished, half diminished, augmented, etc.

Because I hear everything as individual notes, I had to identify each note and then analyze them to figure out which chord type the teacher was playing. I never had enough time for that one, so I didn’t do well on that chapter. :S

Surfing in NY sounds hard. I bet the water there is COLD!

@ FFB & Money Matters: I don’t actually watch American Idol, and I guess I’d better not. Children’s piano recitals wouldn’t be too bad (I used to be in them myself), but I think violin recitals would be another matter. :O

@ Dave: It probably won’t be hard to find it. I don’t know how many Bread songs there are, but there can’t be too many that someone can be named after.

You have perfect pitch, huh? That almost might be more of a curse than a blessing in my book. I know I have pretty good pitch, and watching shows like american idol, or listening to childrens recitals, etc can be pretty tough – as FFB mentioned.

I hate you! You surfed AND you have perfect pitch?!? One day I’ll try out surfing (I know it’s possible in NY just not that easily accessible). I studied music for a time and got a real good sense of relative pitch but it certainly wasn’t perfect pitch. That would have helped a LOT in ear training classes. I can see how perfect pitch could make watching something like American Idol a bit cringe-worthy but I’d still love to have the ability.

(and if you haven’t figured out I’m just jealous, I don’t hate you)
