It is incredibly cheaper to actually sew your own clothes. You can even sell it or do business with it and earn a lot. But of course you have to have the interest, the talent and the patience to work it out. I still do some sewing actually it's more of repairing some holes that can be sewn together for use. It is actually cheaper this way than having it repaired by somebody else. how much is a thread and you wouldn't have to really put so much time to it. It is still best to learn the basics - to save a lot.

Its amazing how much you could do with one piece of fabric and a pattern. Here, in the UK fabric is very expensive, but it depends where you go. Like, in market places you get a metre for a £1 but then again the quality may not be that great and it might rip apart while you working on it. So i say if you want quality you will have to expect to pay more than your budget.

Sew and Away :)

I think fabric is much less expensive in the US than in the UK. I am presently taking a sewing class, which I have written about at http://www.theleantimes.com/?p=531. I have been hunting for less expensive fabric; the cheapest I have found is £2.95 a metre which is aprrox $4.60 and that is for calico.

I have been hunting on Ebay for fabric with some good results.

Happy sewing!

Sorry for replying so late to your questions. I hope this is still helpful.

About the pattern for the yellow top:

Like the other patterns in this post, the yellow top was an experimental pattern I made when I first started learning to draft. Its design is quite simple and you can probably figure out something very similar from another pattern.

In answer to Michelle's question: One of the easiest types of clothing is skirts. Tops require better fit, so to begin with you could make skirts and purchase tops. Or pair old favorite tops with new skirts for a fresh look.

When we were beginners, Penelope and I were fond of sewing tote bags for school books with pockets for pens & pencils. They also made great presents for our aunts. We once used home decor fabrics bought on clearance to make aprons for several family members who owned and ran their own restaurants.

Table cloths, curtains, pillows and pillowcases are other nice and easy projects. The first project I made on my first sewing machine was velveteen curtains for my bedroom which I still use.

Interesting article. I was wondering what types of project you might recommend for someone just learning to sew?
Thanks!

I am wondering where you find such cheap fabrics. Fabrics in the $5-10/yard range, yes, I can find. Occassionally in the $3-5/yard range. But going much cheaper than that (if even available) has usually yielded inferior fabrics that I wouldn't want to wear/use. Any tips?
